Comptoir du Bambou, committed to a sustainable future

Towel weight is an essential criterion when it comes to choosing quality towels. It plays a decisive role in the comfort, absorbency and durability of towels. But what is the right weight for a bath towel, and how can you make the right choice for your customers? We'll give you the keys to choosing the right towels.

What is grammage?

The grammage corresponds to the weight of the fabric per square metre (g/m²). For a bath towel, it indicates the density of the fibres of which it is made. The higher the grammage, the thicker, softer and more absorbent the towel. Conversely, a lower grammage means that the towel will be lighter and less voluminous, but also less absorbent.

The different grammage categories for a bath towel

Towels are available in different weight categories, each with its own advantages:

  • 300 to 400 g/m² : Lightweight towels

    • These towels are ideal for use in summer or in areas where quick drying is preferred, such as gyms or spas. They are less absorbent, but dry faster.
  • 400 to 500 g/m² : The right balance

    • This weight offers a good compromise between lightness and absorbency. Towels in this category are comfortable and thick enough for everyday use, without being too bulky. They are ideal for hotels and wellness centres looking for towels that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
  • 500 to 600 g/m² : Thick, absorbent towels

    • This weight is often preferred in high-end establishments or for luxury domestic use. These towels are soft, dense and highly absorbent, offering a soft, enveloping sensation after the bath. They take longer to dry, but provide superior comfort.

The ideal weight for each use

The choice of weight depends above all on the intended use. For establishments that prefer quick drying and easy maintenance, such as swimming pools or sports halls, a light towel (300-400 g/m²) may be sufficient. Conversely, in hotels and spas, where the customer experience is essential, thicker towels (500 g/m² and more) offer better absorption and greater comfort.

For personal use, the optimum weight is generally between 500 and 600 gsm. This offers an excellent balance between comfort, absorption and ease of maintenance.

The importance of choosing the right material

As well as grammage, the quality of the fibres plays a vital role in the comfort of a bath towel. Visit bamboo speciesBamboo, for example, is a particularly interesting natural fibre for bath towels. Soft, hypoallergenic and highly absorbent, bamboo offers a luxurious texture and an excellent weight-to-quality ratio. Bamboo towels are naturally resistant to bacteria and odours, as well as being environmentally friendly and durable.

On the other hand, cotton towels need to be more weighted because they wear out more quickly and become rough very quickly. Increasing the weight of cotton towels will slow down this phenomenon of roughness. Increasing the weight slows down the drying time, which is conducive to unpleasant odours and the reproduction of bacteria.

The weight of a bath towel is an essential factor in determining its comfort, absorbency and use. For a quality towel, the right weight is generally between 500 and 600 gsmoffering both softness and absorption. At Comptoir du BambouOur bamboo towels are soft, absorbent and environmentally friendly, with the ideal weight to satisfy your business customers.
